The beloved 1995 film Clueless, a modern take on Jane Austen’s Emma set against the vibrant backdrop of Beverly Hills, is headed to the West End with an exciting new cast and an original score by KT Tunstall. Emma Flynn takes on the lead role of Cher Horowitz, the iconic high schooler known for her matchmaking adventures and stylish flair.
Written by Clueless creator Amy Heckerling, the musical features lyrics by Grammy-winning lyricist Glenn Slater, with direction by Rachel Kavanaugh and choreography by Kelly Devine. This fresh adaptation replaces the 2018 off-Broadway jukebox version with an entirely new soundtrack that captures the energy of the ’90s while reimagining Cher’s story for today’s audience.
The original Clueless film, released in 1995, follows Cher Horowitz, a wealthy and fashion-forward high school student in Beverly Hills. Cher is confident, popular, and enjoys playing matchmaker among her friends and classmates. Though she’s well-intentioned, Cher often misreads situations and meddles in others’ lives, leading to both humorous and heartfelt consequences.
Her journey takes a turn when she befriends a new student, Tai Frasier, and attempts to give her a social makeover. Along the way, Cher begins to learn more about herself, her relationships, and what truly matters beyond superficial appearances. She also grapples with unexpected romantic feelings for her ex-stepbrother, Josh, who constantly challenges her worldview and sense of entitlement.
The film, written and directed by Amy Heckerling, draws loose inspiration from Jane Austen’s Emma, cleverly adapting its themes to a ’90s high school setting. Known for its witty dialogue, memorable characters, and iconic fashion, Cluelesshas since become a beloved classic that resonates with audiences for its humor, charm, and exploration of self-discovery.
Keelan McAuley, known for his role in Heathers the Musical, will join the cast as Josh, originally played by Paul Rudd in the film. The cast and crew are eager to bring this vibrant story to London audiences, reintroducing Cher’s wit and charm on a new stage.
Following a try-out run earlier this year at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley, Clueless: The Musical promises to deliver a lively tribute to a beloved classic, reimagined for the West End with new music, updated choreography, and a fresh take on its timeless characters.
