Broadway’s ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ to Add Depth to Final Season

The Stranger Things universe continues to expand with its latest addition, the Broadway production ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow,’ which could significantly shape fans’ experience of the series’ fifth and final season.

Set in Hawkins, Indiana, in 1959, ‘The First Shadow’ delves deeply into the early life of the series’ central antagonist, Vecna, known as Henry Creel during his human years. The plot follows the Creel family’s troubled move to Hawkins, highlighting Henry’s internal struggle against a dark force amidst a chilling local crime spree. The Broadway production promises to deliver new insights and layers to Vecna’s character, enriching viewers’ understanding ahead of season five.

Playwright and Stranger Things series writer Kate Trefry noted that the play isn’t essential to comprehend the upcoming TV finale but suggested that seeing the production offers audiences a deeper appreciation of the series’ conclusion.

Trefry used the Broadway format to explore Henry Creel’s complicated backstory, revisiting early discussions from the series’ writing process about Vecna’s nature and motivations. The play provides a more nuanced psychological exploration of Henry’s character and his connection to the dark forces at work in Hawkins.

Directors Justin Martin and Stephen Daldry faced significant creative challenges, particularly in adapting the show’s iconic Void—a psychic landscape integral to the TV series—to the stage. To achieve this, they employed bold staging techniques, including flooding the stage multiple times to authentically portray the surreal environment familiar to fans.

Martin emphasized the unique potential of theater to capture audiences’ imaginations, distinctly different from television. The collaborative process of developing the play alongside the fifth season also allowed the creative team to explore and refine narrative elements deeply tied to Vecna’s story.

‘First Shadow’ is currently in previews at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre, with its official opening scheduled for April 22. Fans of Stranger Things will find the production a compelling new entry into the series’ lore, offering a fresh perspective and deeper context as they anticipate the show’s dramatic conclusion.
