Broadway Musical ‘& Juliet’ Triumphs, Recouping $17 Million Investment

In an inspiring success story for Broadway, the reimagined musical ‘& Juliet’ has recouped its $17 million capitalization after opening in November 2022. This fresh take on the classic tale of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ has enchanted audiences with its modern twist and vibrant pop score, showcasing the enduring allure of live theater.

The announcement came from producers Max Martin, Tim Headington, Theresa Steele Page, Jenny Petersson, Martin Dodd, and Eva Price, who shared that the show hit this financial milestone as of April 14. ‘& Juliet’ opened at Broadway’s Stephen Sondheim Theatre on November 17, 2022, and stands out as the first new musical of the 2022-2023 season to announce recoupment.

Throughout its run, the musical has played 673 performances, consistently filling 95.5 percent of its seats with an average paid ticket price of $144.44. These impressive statistics underscore the show’s appeal and the robust demand from theatergoers. ‘& Juliet’ has maintained healthy grosses, a testament to its captivating story and dynamic musical numbers.

Joining this season’s successful productions like ‘Merrily We Roll Along,’ ‘An Enemy of the People,’ and ‘Gutenberg! The Musical,’ ‘& Juliet’ shines as a beacon of hope and revival for the Broadway community. The previous season saw musicals such as ‘Six’ and ‘MJ’ reaching similar milestones. Despite the challenges posed by rising costs and a fluctuating audience base post-pandemic, ‘& Juliet’ stands as a symbol of resilience and the unbreakable spirit of live theater.

Many productions have benefited from up to a $3 million tax credit from the state, aiding their financial recovery. However, this support often arrives much later, making ‘& Juliet’s’ swift recoupment even more commendable.

‘We’re so proud to be part of a show that brings so much joy to so many people,’ the producers shared. ‘It’s exciting to be part of the theater industry’s continuing recovery and join a growing list of musicals that have recouped post-pandemic. This achievement is further proof that nothing compares to live theater and the shared experience of human connection. We’re thrilled to continue to share our story of second chances with audiences across the globe.’

With a book by David West Read and a score of pop hits from Max Martin, ‘& Juliet’ is poised for further success. The musical is set to launch a UK Tour in July, a North American Tour in September, and a German production in October. Having premiered on the West End in 2019, it also boasts productions in Australia and Singapore.

‘& Juliet’ is not just a triumph of financial recoupment but a testament to the power of storytelling, music, and the indomitable spirit of live theater. As it continues to captivate audiences worldwide, this musical reaffirms the magic of Broadway and its ability to inspire and entertain across generations.
