The Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ featuring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez has become the talk of the town, setting sales records and playing to full houses at the Hudson Theatre since its opening on October 10. In a recent announcement, the production confirmed an extension of four months, now set to run through July 7, 2024.
This extension marks the second time the show, directed by Olivier Award winner Maria Friedman, has extended its Broadway engagement, following its successful transfer from Off-Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop. ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ tells the complex tale of composer Franklin Shepard and his lifelong friends, writer Mary and lyricist and playwright Charley, spanning three decades in the entertainment business. The musical is celebrated for featuring some of Stephen Sondheim’s most personal and renowned songs.
The musical, with Sondheim’s music and lyrics, includes a book by George Furth, based on the original play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. Friedman’s direction is complemented by a distinguished design and creative team, including Tim Jackson (choreography), Jonathan Tunick (orchestrations), Soutra Gilmour (scenic and costume design), and several others in key roles.
The extension of ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ underscores the enduring appeal of Sondheim’s work and its resonance with contemporary audiences, further cementing its status as a must-see show on Broadway.
