Broadway is experiencing a box office resurgence, with several new productions attracting large audiences and contributing to a 12% overall increase in revenue compared to the previous week. One of the standout successes is the Jamie Lloyd-directed revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, which has joined Broadway’s prestigious ‘$1 Million Club’ after just six performances in its second week at the St. James Theatre.
Despite a reduced preview schedule, Sunset Boulevard brought in $1,075,921.70 at the box office, with an average ticket price of $118. The production filled 93% of its seats, just shy of a complete sell-out, but is expected to see even higher earnings as it ramps up to a full performance schedule in the coming weeks.
Broadway’s most consistent high-grossing shows—Wicked, The Lion King, and Hamilton—continue to dominate, but they were joined by newer productions like The Outsiders and Hell’s Kitchen. Hell’s Kitchen, a musical featuring the music of Alicia Keys, earned $1.4 million last week, making it the fifth-highest-grossing show.
In total, 11 productions surpassed the $1 million mark, including Moulin Rouge! The Musical, MJ The Musical, and Aladdin. Additionally, The Great Gatsby and Oh, Mary! also contributed to the impressive earnings across Broadway’s 32 currently running shows.
Several productions also joined the ‘90s Club,’ achieving 90% or higher seat occupancy. Leading the pack was Romeo and Juliet, which played to 102.54% of its capacity, followed closely by The Outsiders at 101.9% and McNeal and Oh, Mary!, both at 100%. These sell-out shows are part of a broader trend of successful newcomers, with many productions from this year proving to be hits with audiences.
While Broadway’s established titles continue to perform strongly, the rise of new shows like Sunset Boulevard and Romeo and Juliet signals a rejuvenation of the Great White Way, with fresh productions capturing the attention of theatergoers and driving box office success.
