‘Purple Rain,’ the highly anticipated Broadway-bound musical inspired by Prince’s iconic 1984 film, has announced its Minneapolis world premiere dates along with additional creative team members. The musical will run from April 10 through May 11, 2025, at Hennepin Arts’ historic State Theatre in Minneapolis, with an official opening night set for April 30.
Special Tony Award recipient Jason Michael Webb has been named as the production’s music supervisor, also handling musical arrangements and orchestrations. Joining him as music advisers are Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, both of whom have extensive histories as bandmates and musical collaborators with Prince.
As previously announced, the book for ‘Purple Rain’ is written by two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony Award winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, based on the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn. The production is directed by Tony Award nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz. Featuring music, lyrics, and a story by Prince, ‘Purple Rain’ follows The Kid, originally portrayed by Prince in his film debut, as he navigates the Minneapolis club scene, a challenging home life, rivalry, and a budding romance.
The addition of Webb, Z, and Hayes to the creative team promises to bring an authentic and dynamic musical experience to the stage, honoring Prince’s legacy and his groundbreaking contributions to music and performance.
