Brendan Fraser and Brian J. Smith to Star in Samuel D. Hunter’s ‘Grangeville’ at Signature Theatre Off-Broadway

Brendan Fraser, fresh off his 2023 Academy Award win for ‘The Whale,’ will return to the stage in Signature Theatre’s world premiere of ‘Grangeville,’ a new play by Samuel D. Hunter. The production, directed by Jack Serio, will run from February 4 to March 16, 2025, at the Manhattan venue.

Fraser, known for his roles in ‘Gods and Monsters,’ ‘The Mummy,’ and ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,’ will star alongside Brian J. Smith, whose credits include ‘The Matrix Resurrections,’ ‘Sense8,’ and Broadway’s ‘The Glass Menagerie.’ In ‘Grangeville,’ Fraser and Smith portray half-brothers Jerry and Arnold, who reconnect in their hometown of Grangeville, Idaho, while caring for their ailing mother. Fraser’s character, Jerry, has remained in Grangeville, while Smith’s Arnold is an artist who has been living in Rotterdam.

The play, named after the Idaho town, delves into themes of memory, the narratives we create to cope with suffering, and the complexities of forgiveness. Hunter’s exploration of these themes continues his reputation for creating deeply personal and thought-provoking works, as noted in the production’s press release.

‘Grangeville’ will feature scenic design by dots, costume design by Ricky Reynoso, lighting design by Stacey DeRosier, sound design by Chris Darbassie, and dramaturgy by John Baker. The casting team includes David Caparelliotis, Joe Gery, and Elena Sgouros from Caparelliotis Casting.

This highly anticipated world premiere marks another collaboration between Fraser and Hunter, following the success of ‘The Whale,’ and promises to bring a new dimension to Hunter’s storytelling on the Off-Broadway stage.
