Baz Luhrmann is an Australian film, television, and theater director, writer, and producer. He is best known for directing visually stunning and flamboyant films such as Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet, and The Great Gatsby. Luhrmann’s films often blend elements of pop culture with classical literature and music, and his signature style is characterized by elaborate sets, costumes, and choreography. In addition to his film work, Luhrmann has also directed operas and stage productions, and has won numerous awards for his work in the entertainment industry.
Despite his recent Elvis film not receiving any Oscars, it could potentially follow in the footsteps of Moulin Rouge! or Strictly Ballroom by making its way to the stage.
Luhrmann spoke about the musical on the Oscars red carpet, comparing it to Moulin Rouge! and confirming that he would produce it but not direct it. It’s currently unknown whether Global Creatures, who produced both Moulin Rouge! and Strictly Ballroom on stage, will be involved in the Elvis production. Locations, dates, and casting details have yet to be announced.
Moulin Rouge! is currently playing on both the West End and Broadway and in Australia, while a touring production of Strictly Ballroom is in progress in the UK and Ireland.
Released in 2022, Elvis stars Austin Butler and Tom Hanks and tells the story of the iconic musician’s rise and fall.
