Australian Olympic Gold Medallist Matthew Mitcham Set for UK Acting Debut

Matthew Mitcham, renowned Australian diving champion and pioneering openly gay Olympic gold medallist, is readying himself to make his inaugural acting appearance in the United Kingdom. He is set to take the stage in the esteemed play, “Strangers in Between,” slated for later this year.

Mitcham’s rise to global prominence came in 2008 when he captured the gold medal in the 10m platform diving event, scoring what was then the record-breaking highest single-dive score in the annals of Olympic history. Post-retirement, the celebrated athlete turned his talents to the performing arts, transforming his 2012 autobiography “Twists and Turns” into a popular cabaret show that captivated audiences across Australia.

The upcoming theatrical production of “Strangers in Between” will be held at the recently established Golden Goose Theatre in Camberwell. The play’s run is scheduled from September 19 through October 7, with the official press night earmarked for September 22.

Described as “a compelling Australian classic,” “Strangers in Between” is the brainchild of acclaimed playwright Tommy Murphy. The narrative masterfully encapsulates the various trials and triumphs associated with coming of age as a gay individual in modern Australia.

Joining Mitcham on the cast roster are stage artists Stephen Connery-Brown and Alex Ansdell. The production boasts a creative team spearheaded by director Adam Spreadbury-Maher, who previously oversaw the play’s UK debut at the King’s Head Theatre in 2016. Assisting him is designer David Shields, bringing his unique vision to the play’s aesthetics.
