“Gypsy,” the George C. Wolfe revival that put six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald center stage as Mama Rose, has posted a closing notice for Sunday 17 August at the Majestic Theatre, and the production, which had been selling tickets on an open-ended basis, will now wrap after less than ten months on Broadway.
The show began previews on 1 November 2024 and officially opened on 19 December 2024 following a 28-performance preview schedule, and at final curtain it will have logged 269 regular performances.
Despite five Tony Award nominations, including nods for McDonald, Danny Burstein and Joy Woods, plus Best Revival, “Gypsy” walked away empty-handed at the ceremony, but it did score Drama Desk prizes for Outstanding Revival and for McDonald’s lead performance earlier this season.
Box-office tracking shows the musical rebounded sharply when McDonald returned from a brief vacation, the week ending 13 July grossed $816,086, up roughly $522,000 from the prior week, though the house still played to just 61 percent of capacity.
Its departure continues a post-Tony contraction that has already claimed “Boop! The Musical,” “Smash,” “Real Women Have Curves” and “Dead Outlaw,” all of which announced early closing dates after coming up empty at the Tonys.
Wolfe’s staging features choreography by Camille A. Brown, scenic design by Santo Loquasto, costumes by Toni-Leslie James, lighting by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer, and sound design by Scott Lehrer, with Mia Neal handling hair and wigs and Michael Clifton on makeup.
Ticket holders for dates after 17 August will be contacted by their point of purchase for exchanges or refunds, while last-chance seats through closing night remain on sale at the Majestic Theatre box office and authorized outlets.

This is the WORST production of Gyspy I have ever seen. Audra's "performance" is embarrassing, as she is miscast. The show is poorly directed/staged and ill conceived. Lesson learned regarding star vehicles in the future.
