McDonald’s portrayal of Mama Rose marks the first time a Black actor has played the iconic role on Broadway. Under the direction of George C. Wolfe, the revival re-examines the Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents classic while retaining its signature score and backstage-drama intensity.
Already celebrated as the only performer to have won Tony Awards in all four acting categories—and with six wins to her name—McDonald adds another milestone at age 54. Her résumé now spans musical and dramatic roles across theatre, film and television, underscoring a three-decade career defined by artistic range and consistent acclaim.
This year’s Tony nominations highlight a diverse season, with new musicals Buena Vista Social Club, Death Becomes Her and Maybe Happy Ending, as well as plays John Proctor Is the Villain and The Hills of California, topping the list. The 78th Tony Awards ceremony is scheduled for 8 June 2025 at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by Cynthia Erivo.
Since its 1959 debut with Ethel Merman, Gypsy has undergone numerous revivals featuring performers such as Tyne Daly, Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone. McDonald’s achievement adds a new chapter to the musical’s storied lineage while reflecting Broadway’s ongoing strides toward inclusive casting.
With her 11th nomination secured, industry watchers will be keenly observing whether McDonald can extend her record-breaking legacy with a seventh Tony win when winners are revealed next month.
