Fans of the beloved musical Wicked were given a sneak peek into the highly anticipated film adaptation with the release of two iconic songs: Ariana Grande’s rendition of ‘Popular’ and Cynthia Erivo’s powerful version of ‘The Wizard and I.’ Both tracks, dropped online on Wednesday, November 13, have ignited excitement among fans eager for the film’s release later this month.
Grande, known worldwide for her chart-topping pop hits, has taken on the role of Glinda, a part originally performed by Broadway legend Kristin Chenoweth. Chenoweth’s performance of ‘Popular’ in the 2003 Broadway production became a fan favorite, blending charm and humor as Glinda advises her socially awkward roommate, Elphaba, on how to become more popular. Grande’s rendition captures the same playful spirit, promising to bring a fresh yet familiar take on the beloved character.
In addition to Grande’s release, fans were treated to Cynthia Erivo’s version of ‘The Wizard and I.’ Erivo, an acclaimed singer and actress, steps into the role of Elphaba, the green-skinned outcast who would one day become the Wicked Witch of the West. ‘The Wizard and I’ is a pivotal moment in Wicked, capturing Elphaba’s dreams of acceptance and her aspirations of joining forces with the Wizard. Originally brought to life by Idina Menzel on Broadway, Erivo’s interpretation of the song offers a stirring portrayal that hints at the depth and complexity she’ll bring to the film.
