Announcing the London Revival of ‘Starlight Express’: A Storied Musical Returns
The musical ‘Starlight Express,’ with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, is poised for its triumphant return to the London stage. This dynamic production, which originally captivated audiences in 1984 at the Apollo Victoria Theatre and concluded its initial run in 2002, has a distinguished history. Its long-standing presence in Bochum, Germany, for over three decades, along with a global audience exceeding 20 million people, speaks to its enduring appeal.
Renowned for its energetic performances on rollerskates, the original choreography by Arlene Phillips contributed to its unique place in the world of musical theatre. The London revival will see Luke Sheppard at the directorial helm, with an acclaimed resume that includes ‘The Little Big Things.’ Set design will be the handiwork of Tim Hatley, recognized for his work on ‘Back to the Future,’ while costume design will be under the auspices of Gabriella Slade of ‘Six.’ The creative team also includes video designer Andrzej Goulding, lighting designer Howard Hudson, and sound designer Gareth Owen, with new orchestrations and musical supervision by Matthew Brind, and choreography by Ashley Nottingham.
The show will take place in a bespoke venue at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre, with an impressive cast of 40 set to deliver a kinetic performance that promises to envelop the audience both around and above the racing track-inspired stage. For those seeking an elevated experience, “First Class Carriage” seats within the track will move in sync with the show’s exhilarating pace.
