Andrew Lloyd Webber Reveals New Musical Plans and Immersive Phantom of the Opera Experience

Andrew Lloyd Webber has shared exciting details about his upcoming projects, including a new musical set for 2026 and an immersive production of The Phantom of the Opera planned for off-Broadway next year. Speaking to The Sunday Times, the iconic composer provided insights into his future endeavors while also reflecting on the state of the arts in education and theatre.

Lloyd Webber’s new musical, set in Vienna in 1900, is being co-created with Oscar-winning screenwriter Chris Terrio (Argo, Justice League). Scheduled for release in 2026, the musical will be produced alongside Michael Harrison, known for his work on Sunset Boulevard and Starlight Express. Though based on a film, the exact source material remains under wraps.

Additionally, Lloyd Webber confirmed that an immersive version of The Phantom of the Opera will debut off-Broadway next year, though specific details about the production are being kept secret. He also expressed interest in bringing Cats: The Jellicle Ball, an off-Broadway reimagining of his famous musical Cats, to London.

In the interview, Lloyd Webber spoke passionately about the need to revitalize musical theatre and support new writers, emphasizing that the art form has “gone backwards” in recent years. He urged the industry to focus on fostering fresh talent and creating new works to sustain theatre’s ongoing renaissance.

Lloyd Webber also touched on the importance of arts education, having recently met with Chancellor Rachel Reeves to discuss the issue. He criticized the lack of support for provincial theatres and stressed the value of arts programs in schools, which he believes can have a positive impact on broader societal issues such as youth crime and behavioral problems. Through his Music in Secondary Schools Trust (MISST), Lloyd Webber has been providing instruments and tuition to students across 29 schools.

After a challenging 2023, marked by the closure of Phantom on Broadway and the personal loss of his eldest son, Nick, Lloyd Webber now feels reinvigorated. Collaborations with figures like Jamie Lloyd and Lin-Manuel Miranda have renewed his enthusiasm for theatre, and he remains optimistic about the future.

With a new musical in development, innovative productions on the horizon, and a renewed focus on creativity, Lloyd Webber is set to continue shaping the landscape of musical theatre for years to come.
