Alicia Keys’ Childhood-Inspired ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ Set to Debut on Broadway

Alicia Keys, the renowned singer-songwriter and winner of 15 Grammy awards, is bringing her semi-autobiographical musical, ‘Hell’s Kitchen’, to Broadway in March 2024. This theatrical debut follows the success of its off-Broadway run and is scheduled to open at the Shubert Theater. The musical draws from Keys’ experiences growing up in the New York City neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen.

The storyline of ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ mirrors Keys’ own upbringing as the daughter of a white mother and a Black father. It follows the journey of 17-year-old Ali, who discovers her love for the piano and navigates complex relationships, including a challenging dynamic with her single mother. This narrative closely parallels Keys’ personal history, being raised by her single mother, Terria Joseph, who moved from Ohio to New York to pursue acting.

The musical represents a significant personal achievement for Keys, encapsulating the dreams and passions of her mother and the influence of New York City on her life and career. Keys has been developing this project for over a decade in collaboration with playwright Kristoffer Diaz. While inspired by her life, Keys emphasizes that ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ is not a direct autobiography but a broader story about family, identity, and the process of self-discovery.

Keys does not perform in the musical. The leading role in the off-Broadway production was played by Maleah Joi Moon, with the Broadway cast yet to be announced. ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ will have its first Broadway preview on March 28, with opening night on April 20. The musical includes new songs by Keys and new arrangements of some of her most popular hits, such as ‘Fallin’’, ‘No One’, ‘Girl on Fire’, ‘If I Ain’t Got You’, and ‘Empire State of Mind’. Tickets for the show will be available for purchase starting December 11.

Despite receiving mixed reviews in its off-Broadway run, Keys is focused on the audience’s reaction, valuing their emotional connection and response to the musical’s story.
