Adam Lambert revives his theatre roots as Judas in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at the Hollywood Bowl

Recording artist and AMERICAN IDOL alumnus Adam Lambert will step back onto the musical stage next month, playing Judas opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Jesus in a three night concert staging of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at the Hollywood Bowl, running from 1 to 3 August. The engagement follows Lambert’s Broadway debut in CABARET last year and marks a full circle moment for the performer, whose career began in competitive youth theatre.

A foundation forged in the wings

Long before chart singles and arena tours with the surviving members of QUEEN, Lambert trained in an intensive musical theatre programme during his school years. He later joined the national tour of WICKED as an ensemble member and understudy for Fiyero, experience that sharpened his understanding of show business mechanics and stagecraft. Those early lessons proved invaluable when he pivoted to television, rising to prominence as runner up on the eighth season of AMERICAN IDOL.

Bringing rock star energy to a classic score

Lambert has admired Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera since childhood and has always felt drawn to the complexity of Judas. The role’s restless scepticism and vocal athleticism align with Lambert’s powerful tenor and flair for dramatic storytelling. Rehearsals have focused on balancing raw rock vocals with nuanced character work, allowing the singer to explore the apostle’s conflict and emotion without sacrificing musical precision.

Collaboration with Cynthia Erivo

Sharing the stage with Cynthia Erivo adds further excitement to the production. Erivo, known for her Tony winning performance in THE COLOR PURPLE and her film work, will portray Jesus, promising a dynamic reimagining of the central relationship. The Hollywood Bowl’s vast outdoor setting will give the pair an arena sized canvas, blending concert scale with theatrical intimacy.

Expanding creative horizons

Lambert’s return to theatre does not signal a retreat from his recording career. He continues to tour globally as frontman for QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT and is developing an original musical set in 1970s New York, infused with glam rock spirit. Writing songs for the new project draws on his dual identity as a rock vocalist and stage performer, hinting at future crossovers between his concert and theatrical work.

Anticipation builds for the Bowl run

Tickets for JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR at the Hollywood Bowl have already sparked strong demand, driven by the star pairing and the production’s limited run. For Lambert, the engagement offers an opportunity to reconnect with the discipline that shaped his artistry, while for audiences it promises a fresh interpretation of a seminal score delivered by two powerhouse voices.

As August approaches, fans and industry observers alike will be watching Lambert’s Judas with interest, viewing it as both a homecoming and a new chapter in an already multifaceted career.
