Tick, Tick…. Boom! is set to make its Melbourne professional debut!

Tick, Tick… Boom! is a musical drama based on the life of composer and playwright Jonathan Larson, who wrote the hit musical Rent. It is set in New York City in the 1990s and explores Larson’s struggles to make it as a composer and find success and fulfilment in the cutthroat world of musical theatre. The film follows Larson’s journey as he balances his passion for creating music and his desire for success and fulfilment, while navigating the challenges and sacrifices that come with pursuing his dreams.

The film adaptation of “Tick, Tick… BOOM!” was directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of “Hamilton,” in his feature film directorial debut. The cast includes Andrew Garfield as Larson, alongside Robin de Jesús, Alexandra Shipp, Joshua Henry, Judith Light, and Vanessa Hudgens.

Jonathan Larson

Jonathan Larson was an American composer and playwright. He was born on February 4, 1960, in White Plains, New York and died on January 25, 1996, in New York City. He was best known for creating the hit musical Rent, which opened on Broadway in 1996 and went on to win several Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Rent was groundbreaking for its use of rock and roll music, its representation of the LGBTQ community, and its depiction of the lives of young artists in New York City. Larson’s death from an aortic aneurysm the night before Rent’s first off-Broadway preview was a great loss to the theatrical community. He is remembered as one of the most talented and innovative composers of his generation.

Before his passing, Larson had previously created the musical “Tick, Tick… BOOM!” which is another example of his exceptional talent.

Tick, Tick… BOOM! will have it’s red carpet opening at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre on Tuesday 7th February before touring to Brisbane’s QPAC Playhouse followed by Sydney’s Lyric Theatre.

Tick, Tick… BOOM! had its first premiere Off-Broadway in 2001 and has since toured extensively, including a US national tour, a West End production, an Off-Broadway revival, and numerous international productions.
