The world’s first Spiegelclub has arrived

The Pink Flamingo Spiegelclub opened its pretty pink doors on 22nd August 2019.  The swish new venue has certainly filled a gap in the entertainment landscape in Queensland, with both locals and tourists flocking to the cabaret theatre and high-end club. AussieTheatre’s Peter J Snee caught up with the show’s creator Sue Porrett, earlier this week.

Sue originally worked as a trapeze artist and she grew up with the circus travelling the world performing. She had a fulfilling life as a performer which she enjoyed very much, but her mind was always backstage.

When she made the decision to explore the world beyond performing, Sue naturally made the transition to the behind-the-scenes world, where she started producing her own shows. Sue is the producer and creative mind behind recent productions such as Lumiere, Zirkus, Solaria & the 50th-anniversary tour of Moscow State Circus.

My experience has been predominantly large scale productions with 45+ performers on stage, so this is a huge challenge for me, having such a small stage but I have always wanted to do it.

I have always wanted to create something intimate and I had seen this venue previously. I used to say that it could be the most incredible cabaret venue, but it was a night club at the time. Unfortunately, the nightclub went out of business, but what it did mean was that one day, I got a call from my business partner, Tony Rigas. We had a long conversation about the idea and agreed that if I brought in my production experience and he brought his hospitality experience we could make a go of this – Sue said.

Fast forward to today, and the venue is more fabulous than ever. It’s an extraordinary space where the old Spiegeltent meets the modern world. An establishment purposely designed with all the comforts of a luxury first-class theatre. The first Spiegelclub in the world. The club’s lavish interior was designed by Tony who has a keen eye for the fine details.

Suavé is The Pink Flamingo Spiegelclub’s first residency and delivers a myriad of international and Australian performing artists across a range of disciplines including burlesque, dance, cirque-style acrobatics and daring aerial acts, laugh out loud comedy, flamboyant cabaret and more! Talent has been sourced from Russia, Mexico, USA, UK and beyond!

Although Sue is credited with directing the production, she was very keen to point out that she could not have done it without the backing of her incredible team who have all played a part in launching the club to where it is now.

The show runs 6 performances a week, Wednesday through Saturday with a post-show party on Friday and Saturday nights that audiences are invited to stay and enjoy. The post-show party on Friday’s is themed Havanna Fever with live performances from The Koi Boys who are now in residency. Saturday’s after-party is themed Taboo, which explores the darker side of cirqué, both shows have a live DJ and drinks are served until the small hours.

We have been just amazed at how we have been received by the locals and just how much positive word of mouth we have been receiving. We will continue to listen to the feedback and craft the best shows we can, Sue said.

Suavé is now playing at The Pink Flamingo Spiegelclub, visit their website for more information and to book tickets.
