The five shows you must see in 2010

The theatre shows you must see in 2010.

AussieTheatre.com has compiled a list of the five shows you must see in 2010!

SPRING AWAKENING
The controversial Broadway musical comes to Australia via the Sydney Theatre Company, with the musical to premiere at the Sydney Theatre on February 10. With an exceptional score ranging from power ballads to grunge anthems that capture the spinetingling highs and lows of youthful desire, Spring Awakening has all the energy of a rock concert and all the power of a great drama. A new generation of performers, cast from open auditions, will take to the stage to realise this Tony Award-winning musical. It may be 1891 but when these exceptional singers burst into song they express electric inner worlds that will be instantly recognisable to anyone who is – or ever was – a teenager. Bookings: (02) 9250 1777.

MARY POPPINS
The show will almost certainly live up to the hype! The show everyone knows, Mary Poppins, is headed to Australia and will premiere in Melbourne at the Her Majesty’s Theatre in July. Whilst some casting has been announced, the big question remains: who will play Mary? Despite extensive auditions across the country, producers still haven’t found someone. One thing is for sure – someone will be delivering that spoonful of sugar come July. Bookings: www.showbiz.com.au.

GOD OF CARNAGE
Adelaide audiences will be wowed late in 2010 when the Tony Award-winning play God Of Carnage makes its way to the Dunstan Playhouse as part of the State Theatre Company of South Australia subscription season. Featuring Yasmina Reza’s incisive observations, acerbic wit and deliciously shrewd humour, God of Carnage is a hysterically funny night of name-calling, tantrums and tears before bedtime. THE DROWSY CHAPERONE
The Melbourne Theatre Company will be the toast of the theatre world early in 2010 when it presents the Broadway hit musical The Drowsy Chaperone. Starring Geoffrey Rush, the spectacular show opens at the Playhouse on January 18. With a star-studded cast, sequin-drenched costumesand dazzling new production numbers, The Drowsy Chaperone is a jazz-hot trip back to the golden age of musicals when stars had charisma, Broadway had romance and Rodgers had Hart. UNCLE VANYA
In what will be one of the biggest theatre shows in years, a star-studded cast will line-up for Uncle Vanya at the Sydney Theatre Company late in 2010. Gliding effortlessly between comedy and tragedy, this treasured classic from Anton Chekhov lays bare the fruitlessness of human endeavour with exceptional warmth, humour and insight.
