David Campbell brings Christmas to the new Coliseum Theatre

Christmas is coming early to Sydney!

David Campbell, joined by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, will perform a showcase of songs from his album ‘Baby It’s Christmas’ at the brand new Sydney Coliseum Theatre on December 12 and 13. The concerts will feature brand new orchestral arrangements specifically curated for David and the SSO.

“The Christmas at the Coliseum event marks the first time the Sydney Coliseum Theatre will open its doors for a ticketed music event – a huge milestone in the history of the West, and for our landmark new venue. We can’t think of a better way to mark the occasion than with the immense talents of Australia’s premier orchestra and David Campbell. This is the beginning of a new era in entertainment for Western Sydney. West HQ are immensely proud of what we will offer both our first time and existing customers” says West HQ’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Errington.

David is one of Australia’s most recognisable personalities. During the week, he is the co-host of Today Extra and Weekend Today alongside Sonia Kruger. Outside of TV, he is often seen frequenting the stage, with theatrical credits include Company, Sunset Boulevard, Shout! The Legend of the Wild One, Assassins, and most recently Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Musical. David has also been featured on Cast Recordings for his stage work, and has released several studio albums featuring some of his favourite songs.

I had a chat with David about working with the SSO, as well as being the first person to perform in this brand new theatre space.

How has working with Sydney Symphony Orchestra been different from past performances?

Working with the Orchestra is obviously on a much bigger scale than what I’m used to. There are so many more of them, so it’s a new experience for me to make sure that many people sound as beautiful as possible. It’s a wonderful opportunity, it’s a rare gift for a performer to work with the SSO. It’s also a little bit over the top, which is what Christmas is all about.

Do you have an absolute favourite Christmas song?

This changes all the time. At the moment my favourite carol is ‘O Holy Night’, and my favourite Christmas song would have to be ‘Jingle Bells’, a popular choice in my house at the moment. Although with my twins the ‘Jingle Bells, Batman smells’ adaptation is more frequently sung.

What can audiences expect from your concert?

I think they can expect a fantastic, old school Christmas performance. If it wasn’t for the 36 degree heat I’d be in my Christmas sweater! They’ve thrown me the challenge of singing Mariah Carey, which I’ve never tackled before, so that’s really exciting. It will be a really great night.

Are you excited to be performing at the Coliseum?

Absolutely. It’s not very often you get to open a new venue. It’s an unbelievable opportunity for me. It’s so thrilling to be involved with such a world class venue.

Finally, what’s the best thing about Christmas?

My favourite part of Christmas is watching my kids open up their presents on Christmas morning and seeing the absolute joy on their faces. It’s the best.
