Inside the new Australian tour of The Sound of Music: we talk to the cast – Lorraine Bayly

The well loved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical, The Sound of Music, will commence in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre on 13 December this year, followed by a season at Brisbane’s Lyric Theatre from 11 March, 2016. We sat down with the cast for a quick chat about the show and will feature our interviews on AussieTheatre.

Lorraine Bayly

John Frost announced the stellar cast of this acclaimed production this week.

“We have assembled a sensational cast to play these iconic roles. Cameron Daddo will be a wonderfully strong and stern Captain, and Amy Lehpamer, already with several musical roles to her name, will leap to stardom as Maria.

“We’re very pleased to be working with Marina Prior again, and to bring Lorraine Bayly to musical theatre audiences.

“And we’re especially pleased to bring acclaimed opera star Jacqui Dark to the musical stage.”

We chatted to the wonderful cast about this exciting upcoming production and what they’re all looking forward to about it.

LORRAINE BAYLY

Bayly, now 78, will be taking on the role of Frau Schmidt, a very different role to the one she is currently playing in Ensemble Theatre’s Shoe-horn Sonata.

On following on her from her current role:

“This is the perfect one to follow up after Shoe-horn Sonata. It should give me joy, and peace.”

On what she’s looking forward to:

“It looks as if it’s going to be a joyous occasion. That’s what I’m looking for now; something pleasant, nice people and a good show. And this ticks all those boxes.”

On performing in dozens of shows:

“It’ll be my 50th show! Which is even more exciting because we’re celebrating 50 years since the movie came out!”

On singing along backstage:

“I’ll be singing in the dressing room, and they won’t be able to stop me! Every song in it is catchy. Rodgers and Hammerstein know how to make it work, the music is beautiful.”
