A Quick Chat With Blessing Mokgohloa

After an exceptionally successful Australian Premiere in November 2011, Blessing Mokgohloa will be performing in the return season of Bad Blood Blues at Chapel Off Chapel’s Loft Theatre from next Thursday 9th February.

We ask him our 20 questions…

1. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Definitely a vet or a doctor

2. Who is the most important person in the world to you?

My life is what it is because of the people I am blessed to have around me. But my girlfriend’s pretty special!

3. What animal best represents you and why?

The African buffalo is considered the most dangerous of the Big 5 (that includes lion, rhino, elephant and leopard). There are stories of buffalo that pursue and single out the individual responsible for deaths and injuries to their young- leaving the rest of the hunting party unharmed. Sounds like a noble beast- if there’s such a thing!

4. If you were a contestant on Deal or No Deal, how much would you need to be on offer before you walked away?

What’s the highest possible amount? Go hard or go home, I say!

5. What was the first piece of theatre/film/TV you ever appeared in and how old were you?

I did some extra work on Neighbours about 5 years ago. It was exciting… for about 5 minutes!

6. Windows or MAC?

Windows!! I like people, all sorts of people. Technology with limited compatibility doesn’t reflect me.

7. Favourite food?

Whatever my mum cooks when I visit after a long time away from home.

8. Who is the actor you would most like to work alongside?

I’ve gotta go the Australian of the Year- Geoffrey Rush. Can you get his people to call my people?? Ha-ha! No, seriously…

9. What five songs would be the first you put a mix tape?

I think that list largely depends on who I’m making the tape for. But my mp3 player has a pretty good mix of artists and genres- from Ray Charles to Kanye, N.E.R.D to Mumford and Sons.

10. What is the best thing about theatre in Australia?

It is very accessible for performers.

11. What’s the worst thing about theatre in Australia?

I’m not sure it gets the international recognition it deserves- not like Broadway or The West End.

12. Name one moment when you looked around, breathed happily and felt content.

Watching bad TV with my family after a big meal- there’s something about doing the mundane with people you love that’s priceless.

13. Where is the most interesting place you have travelled?

Italy. There’s just so much art, history and culture crammed in, it’s overwhelming.

14. Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met?

I actually don’t know! I’m not easily star struck so I will have a long hard think about that one.

15. Most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?

Most embarrassing thing for me happened AFTER I was onstage, having dinner with my girlfriend’s grandparents just after performing steamy sex scene on stage… Awkward.

16. What’s your life motto?

At this point in my life it’s definitely ‘Go hard or go home’. And I’m not homesick!

17. What’s your favourite post-show snack?

I’m more interested in a drink rather than a snack after a show.

18. What’s your biggest phobia?

Now why would I make my fears public knowledge? Nice try!

19. What is the worst date you’ve ever had?

The one I had alone… Ha-ha! I don’t remember any bad dates at all- repressed memories perhaps?

20. Where do you see yourself in five years? 

On stage with Geoffrey Rush- let’s make it happen!
