A Quick Chat With Angela Scundi

Angela Scundi is preparing to star as Cindy Lou in the Australian premiere of The Marvelous Wonderettes, a smash hit off-Broadway musical set to play at Melbourne’s iconic fortyfivedonwstairs (45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne) from 22 August.

Having previously performed in Three Penny Opera and Spring Awakening for Sydney Theatre Company and The Rocky Horror Show for both TML Enterprises and Newtheatricals Angela is no stranger to the stage.

We catch up with Angela to ask her our 20 Questions…

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I’ve always known I wanted to be a performer. Like every little girl I wanted to be a ballerina. I also had fleeting fantasies of being an Air Hostess, Zoologist, Florist and host my own cooking show (that dream may still be there a little bit…)

Who is the most important person in the world to you?

They know who they are.

What animal best represents you and why?

I’m going to say cat, based largely on temperament. Cuddle me, love me and now don’t touch me. Feed me and I’ll keep coming back.

If you were a contestant on Deal or no Deal, how much would need to be on offer before you walked away?

Oh look it would have to be at least $15,000. It depends what cases are left, so many factors to consider. Strategy, you know?

What was the first piece of theatre/film/TV you ever appeared in, and how old were you?

I did my first ballet concert at age 3 and I was dressed as a swan. The first musical I did was called Jungle and I played a well-mannered Hippopotamus, I was 12.

Mac!

Favourite food?

Most of my favourites I can no longer eat!  Pasta, pizza. The food I miss the most is bread. Fresh crusty ciabatta with olive oil, mmmm.

Who is the actor you would most like to work beside?

So many! However honestly speaking the first name that popped into my head…Ryan Gosling.

What is the best thing about theatre in Australia?

The people.

What is the worst thing about theatre in Australia?

When we forget about the art and focus on the money.

Name one moment you looked around, breathed happily and felt content.

If I were to share one, it would be the very first time it happened. I was in year 9 and was attending a school motivational speakers session with Bachelor Girl. We were asked to close our eyes and think of the saddest or most tragic thing that we had ever had to deal with. I can remember searching for it, taking a peek around the room at the other 100’s of kids searching for there’s and thinking, “I haven’t ever experienced that feeling, I have a really good life.” A lot has changed since then, obviously, however quite often I look around and think “I have a really good life.”

Where is the most interesting place you have ever travelled?

Korea, veeeery interesting.

Who is the most famous person you have met?

Cate Blanchett

Most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you on stage?

There have been a few. The worst for me is corpsing during a song where there were only 4 of us singing, in a spotlight and we all lost it and couldn’t for the life of us get it back together, I won’t name and shame.

What’s your life motto?

“Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.”

What’s your favourite post show snack?

Red wine and hot chips.

What’s your biggest phobia?

Being in the ocean.

What is the worst date you have ever had?

We ended up at Stalactites at 1 am. You know you’re not keen when you order a plate of lamb with garlic sauce.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Much the same as where I am now. A little bit older, perhaps a little wiser, hopefully employed a little more, definitely a few extra cups of crazy.
