From Patrick White Award-nominated playwright, Mark Langham, comes another biting historical comedy. Presented by the new and dynamic Ship’s Cat Theatre Company, and mounted at the versatile 107 performance space in Redfern, “The Woman and the Car” twists the narrative on a woman far ahead of her time.
Dorothy Levitt liked to go fast. At the tender age of 20 she became the first woman to ever compete in a motor race, and emerged as a pioneer of both female motoring and independence. A woman without fortune or title, ‘Dottie’ set multiple world records, penned her own book and taught Queen Alexandra and the Royal Princesses how to drive. The press dubbed her The Fastest Girl on Earth, and her story is at the heart of Mark Langham’s new play The Woman and the Car.
Female history is largely one of exclusion, silence, absence and bias. By keeping Dorothy Levitt’s story alive we aim to celebrate a woman’s sense of self-worth in the face of opposition, her ability to determine her own choices, and the right to influence social change. As well as being female-centric, The Woman and the Car is also comedy-centric. Our mission was to develop a piece of theatre that uses comedy to connect. Laughter is the great equalizer and the biggest tool we have as theatre-makers to create empathy and exact change.
Small, fierce and a little bit cheeky, Ship’s Cat Theatre Company is a new independent theatre company based in Sydney. Under the Artistic Direction of Zoë Crawford, Ship’s Cat focuses on female stories whilst embracing and experimenting with theatricality, showcasing emerging local creatives from all walks of life.
