In its first major event since COVID hit, Parramatta’s flagship, symphonic choir River City Voices returns to local stages on 22 May with a luscious choral and orchestral program – Songs of Destiny.
Revel in the full force of the Willoughby Symphony and Willoughby Symphony Choir as they join River City Voices for the very first time.
With over 100 performers on stage, you’ll scale the heights of heaven with Johannes Brahms’ rarely heard “Song of Destiny” (Schicksalslied), and thrill to the anger of the Gods in his “Song of the Fates” (Gesang der Parzen).
Conductor Sarah Penicka-Smith says, “Brahms’ powerful music paints radically different pictures of the forces that control our destinies. Who influences what happens to us? And how do we take charge of our own futures?”
Through local Indigenous composers’ Troy Russell (The Chant) and Elizabeth Sheppard’s (Gandangarragal) long-awaited World Premiere performances, you can explore the way forward in evocative choral music of courage and hope.*
The program also includes music by Felix Mendelssohn, Enya’s beautiful song ‘May It Be’ from the film ‘Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’, and Emma Greenhill’s ‘Korrowall’, winner of the Willoughby Symphony’s 2022 Young Composer Award.
