As actors we admire those who can improvise. I should correct that, improvise well! So many actors claim that they can impro, but throw them infront of an audience and ask them to start and they would cease up quicker than an old bomb car.

After finishing a four week run of my show, I wanted some time away from the theatre but when an invite came through for an impro night at a pub, it seemed like a great idea. The Roxbury Hotel in Glebe has been a venue I’ve been wanting to get to for a while. It always has plenty of great looking stuff on, but the one I have really been dying to see for ages is the Tuesday night staple, Full Body Contact No Love Tennis.
First things first, what a great room, in a really nice and well patronised pub. For the first half, we had quite the treat, a sneak peek for a new show, Survivor Impro, who are putting on a full scale version of the show, including jazz musicians and a full on dance party at the Queen St Studios on October 30. The show had some nice moments and I found myself laughing nice and loud. But I knew the real action was taking place after the break.
The cast for tennis changes regularly, and I was very much treated on Tuesday night with the pairings of Cale Bain & Rebecca De Unamuno, Ben Jenkins & Carlo Ritchie and Dave Callan & Stewart McCure. Host Jon Williams was an absolute gem and is a very funny man. The format of the show is fantastic and the performances were great. The audience were enthralled for the whole performance and the laughter flowed very freely. These guys are pros and they make it look easy, which would make any actor sweat bullets. In two weeks they are having an amateur night where anyone can get up and have a spin, I’m thinking of getting up there. I am insane!
Cale and Rebecca were the winners on the night, but all six performers were amazing. Haven’t laughed that hard in a while! So if you are looking for a good Tuesday night out, head to the Roxbury, the only thing that is for certain, you’ll have a laughter filled evening!
