The Role of the Producer

Ah, the life of a producer beckons you! Welcome to a fearless group of individuals, eager to create that enchanting masterpiece that will have audiences braving fiery obstacles and scaling slippery heights to secure their tickets.

Becoming a producer isn’t rocket science, but it does demand a symphony of skills.

As a producer, you’ll experience exhilarating highs and crushing lows—but fear not, for I’ve endured this rollercoaster for four decades! Stay humble during your triumphs and avoid despair during your setbacks. A producer’s life demands resilience and persistence; it’s a marathon, not a sprint!

Once you’ve found the script that feels like ‘the one’, assemble a team to bring it to life. Choose a director you can collaborate with, a designer who respects your budget, and remember: you’re the captain, the leader, the confidant. You’ll need to outwork everyone and, of course, rely on a pinch of luck!

When raising funds for your production, heed the producer’s golden rules:

  1. Never use your own money
  2. Never use your own money

Treat your investors as partners, for it’s their show too. Keep them informed, even when the news isn’t great. Nurture these relationships, and they’ll support you in return.

In this remarkable industry, there’s no definitive formula for success! There isn’t always an ideal solution to every challenge. Trust your intuition and creativity, and through diligent effort and a touch of fortune, you’ll find yourself basking in the glow of accomplishment.

The role of a producer is multifaceted and dynamic. Essentially, they are the maestros, orchestrating every element of the production to ensure a seamless transition from conception to the stage, overseeing its journey throughout the run, and ultimately guiding it to a graceful finale. Their diverse responsibilities encompass a broad spectrum of tasks, which we will cover over the next few columns. For today let’s start with acquiring the rights!

Securing the essential rights from various creative sources, such as authors, composers, collaborators, translators, and owners of underlying rights—for instance, the rights to a film or novel that serves as the foundation for a play or musical adaptation.

Securing the necessary rights is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Legal protection: Acquiring the rights ensures you have the legal permission to adapt, perform, or reproduce the original work. Failing to do so could result in copyright infringement claims, costly lawsuits, and potential damage to your reputation.
  2. Respect for creators: Obtaining the rights acknowledges and respects the efforts and creativity of the original authors, composers, and other contributors. It ensures that they receive proper credit and compensation for their work.
  3. Control over the production: Having the rights allows you to make creative decisions related to the adaptation and presentation of the work. This includes making changes to the script, score, or any other aspect of the production that might be necessary for a successful stage performance.
  4. Exclusive access: Securing the rights often grants you exclusive access to the material for a specified period or region, preventing other producers from staging a competing production. This exclusivity can help your production stand out and increase its chances of success.
  5. Financial benefits: A well-executed adaptation of a popular work can generate significant revenue and enhance your reputation as a producer. Acquiring the rights is an investment in your production’s potential profitability and long-term success.

Until next week my friends!
