Sunday in the Park with Victorian Opera
Bookings are now open for Victorian Opera’s production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapins’s Sunday in the Park with George.
First produced in 1984, Sunday in the Park with George is an imagined account of the characters in George Seurat’s famous impressionist painting A Sunday on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884) and an exploration of the intensity, passion and work that creates art. It won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as Tony, Drama Desk and Oliver awards.
Alexander Lewis is George, returning to Australia after time with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and Christina O’Neill plays his muse Dot. The company, which mixes music theatre and opera favourites, includes Nancye Hayes, David Rogers-Smith, Antoinette Halloran and Dimity Shepherd, and it’s directed by Stuart Maunder.
After the success of the contemporary opera Nixon in China, it’s hoped that this Sondheim musical will continue to bring new audiences to the opera.
