Broadway royalty has wise words for Aussie composers

Stephen Schwartz is one of Broadway’s most accomplished and influential composers. Young theatre fans may best recognise him as the composer of Wicked. But his credits include a string of hit shows including Godspell, Pippin and The Magic Show to name a few.
Stepping into a role in the middle of a theatrical run, and into an already established cast and crew, is always a challenge. When the role is the male lead in the 21st century’s biggest musical juggernaut, formidable might be a better word. For Tim Campbell, this is exactly the situation he has to face in a little less than a week, taking over from Rob Mills as playboy prince Fiyero in the smash-hit Sydney season of Wicked.
Chris Wallace, an American born Australian resident has worn a number of creative hats in both Australia and the USA. From writing and producing on-air promotion in NYC, to composing original songs for children’s television shows in Washington D.C., to appearing on Australian TV shows like Stingers and Blue Heelers.
Celebrating 20 years of Brechtian-punk, The Tiger Lillies begin their Australian tour of Songs from Shockheaded Peter and Other Gory Verses on July 24 in Sydney, before visiting Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane and Darwin. Anne-Marie Peard spoke with founder Martyn Jacques about his inspirations and his quest for originality.
