THE HON
It sounds ridiculously obvious, but I am infinitely blessed to be born in Australia. This country has so much to offer in so many ways, and it can be all too easy to forget that my life would have turned out very differently purely because of the geography of birth.

I have just had a terrific week. Getting on a plane and getting away is always invigorating whether it be overnight to Melbourne or further afield overseas etc. Going to Perth is not something I do very often, only because it is so far away and there has to be a pretty good reason for going there. It seems like half way to LA by the time you get off the plane, and then, usually within 48 hours you have to come back. I once did a turn around of about 16 hours to see a production of Hair — no more, too old!

Theatre is not a "must have" industry. Unlike the staples of life - such as food, water, electricity etc - it is an industry that relies on people getting off their backside and doing something. It relies on individuals who inspire, and hence have influence on the rest of us to either take part in, or watch the end result.

Without publications, theatre would not exist.  It might sound shocking, but you generally need scripts to create theatre. Even if you don’t, you need cue sheets and programs and a plethora of other items printed on paper. Theatre is always going to be linked to publications, and that’s just how it is.

Straight To The Point

Before starting the second column on this topic, I must add that the amount of commercial musical flops as opposed to the extraordinary success of so many commercial musicals is quite remarkable. So much care is taken with a big show before it comes to Australia to ensure timing and casting etc will all help to make it work. We see less and less commercial flops these days in Australia. I think it is important to make this point.

You’ve got to love that the term ‘political turmoil’ in Australia simply means uncertainty over the Prime Minister and negotiations with independent and Green MPs, as opposed to fighting in the streets, roadside bombs and political assassinations.

I like travelling. I really do. To generation y, the world is a very, very small place indeed. Yes, jetlag sucks, but we are blessed in our ability to merely hop on a plane and be on a different continent merely 20 hours later.

Where's the microphones PDF Print E-mail
Straight To The Point

I can remember as a callow youth in the early 60s being in a high school production of Oklahoma. Being very proud of the whole experience I was talking to my father after the show who complained “I had trouble hearing them, why weren't they miked?” I threw my very young hands up in horror exclaiming “Miked, legitimate music theatre actor are never miked”, this was, I might add about 1962. At that time it was still considered that to mike a musical was just ‘not done”. A good performer should be able to project to the back row of any size theatre with ease. I mean isn’t that what Ethel Merman always did? Who ever miked the Merm?
