Maybe it’s just me speaking as totally broke gap year student, but ticket prices seem stupidly high at the best of times. I sat down to do my first draft of tickets for the year the other day, and safe to say, it was  astonishingly high. Being currently unemployed (and not due to lack of trying to qualifications, I might add) means there are some shows I simply will not be able to see, which truly breaks my heart.

Now, I like to think I am pretty good with my saving. I cash in Christmas and birthday presents as tickets all the time, use as many discounts, student or otherwise, as I can. And somehow, I still have to miss out on things because I just don’t have the money.

So, why are tickets so expensive?

I know the economics of theatre well enough to know profit is paramount, but sometimes tickets are so expensive I just cannot fathom why someone would pay that much for them. The sad thing is, if they were cheaper I would go and see more shows, and tell all my friends to go see them too, and even more tickets would be sold.

I can safely say that if I don’t go to things because tickets are so expensive, I really wonder how gen-y’s who aren’t as theatrically-inclined as myself would ever find the desire to attend shows. With coming events like the Adelaide Fringe, there should be some sort of discount scheme for multiple shows- since I have over 30 in total I want to see, all varying in price from dirt cheap to sky high.

So, if any ticket agencies happen to be reading this, please take pity on us poor students- you will get much better attendance rates because of it.
